Nvidia Drops New Gaming Chip Just For China Mid Trade War!

Nvidia made a new RTX 4090 chip called the 4090 D that’s optimized for Chinese customers. Learn about the 4090 D and how it fits into the US-China chip battle.

In Short

  • Nvidia made a slightly weaker RTX 4090 variant for China called the 4090 D that complies with US export rules
  • First China-specific gaming GPU since the US cracked down on exporting high-end AI chips
  • Part of the ongoing tech trade battle between the US and China centering on AI and chips

The 4090 D – A China Exclusive

A’ight, let me break this down for y’all. So Nvidia, one of the biggest chip makers in the game, just revealed a new graphics card called the GeForce RTX 4090 D. Now this ain’t just another Nvidia GPU. The 4090 D is specially designed for Chinese customers based on the export laws coming out the US!

See, the regular 4090 is so powerful, the US government banned selling it to China along with some other Nvidia AI chips. They scared China gon use the tech to cook up some Skynet level threat! But Nvidia still wanna tap into that sweet, sweet Chinese money, feel me?

So they whipped up the 4090 D which they claim is 5% weaker at gaming/creating. Not a huge difference for players but juuuust enough to slide through the new export rules. The 4090 D launches in China this January for about $1,850. Cost a lil more than the 3080 Ti too. This is the first Chinese-exclusive GPU Nvidia dropped since the US updated they export laws in October.

Chip Battles Heat Up

Now why Nvidia taking losses to push a custom China chip mid trade war? Two words – money moves. China is a gold mine for AI chips, which Nvidia dominates with over 90% market share and $7 billion+ in revenue. But between the US cracking down on exports and Chinese companies like Huawei leveling up they chip game, Nvidia facing threats.

Them US chip laws definitely hurting too. Straight up blocked updated versions of two other chips Nvidia built for China (shoutout the A800 and H800). And they next gen AI beast called the HGX H20? Delayed until 2024 thanks to politics. Cold world!

Nvidia’s big boy rivals Intel and AMD making moves too. Intel just dropped some new generative AI chips talking about “AI Everywhere.” Not to mention AMD’s 8 Chakra AI chips coming soon. Everyone wanna slice off a piece of that sweet AI pie!

Final Words

And that’s the tea on Nvidia’s new Chinese exclusive GPU! Them 4090 D chips is a calculated play to stay printing RMB while complying with export regs. But between trade wars and hungry competitors, best believe drama is brewing! We’ll see if China showed enough “loyalty” to cop the 4090 Ds or take they business elsewhere. If AI chips have taught us anything, it’s that clout and politics always come first!

Let ya boy know what y’all think bout these trade wars in the comments! Who really winning between Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Chinese chip companies? Which new GPU y’all copping in 2023? Holla at me after peeping the specs!
